Badgerdog Adult Workshop: Poetic Forms from the Middle East
Terrazas Branch Library

“When you imitate the old poets, you have a better chance of sounding like yourself than when you’re copying your contemporaries,” wrote Elizabeth Bishop. Western Romantic poetry was shaped by Christian values but also by poetic forms and values from the Middle East that expanded through the Ottoman Empire. Led by poet Micah Ruelle, you’ll learn about the historical roots and execution of two of the oldest poetic forms (the ghazal and the quasida), as well as how those forms have been revisited and modified in recent times (by Agha Shahid Ali and Lorca).
